Student Resources

Useful Learning Tools
This section has resources that we have found valuable to our students and all who want to continue to hone their sailing skills. Generally, they will be published as part of the Members' news page and then moved here.
US Sailing's Starboard Portal

A few things that might be of particular interest:
In the Tips from Industry Experts section, Chelsea Carlson’s presentation on sailing weather.
  • In the US Sailing Team section, several presentations about being on a college sailing team and Erika Reineke’s starting line awareness video.
  • In the Sailing With STEM section, the trigonometry of sailing (yes, all you high schoolers, there *is* an actual application for trig!) and a couple of good wind awareness videos.
  • For younger sailors (younger than 10?) there’s a program called “Mr. Childers’ Boat House,” patterned after “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
  • RS Sailing has some good videos in the Contributor Content section.
Great Short Clips on Important Things to Learn

Points of Sail
One of the most important thing to learn about sailing is heading compared to wind direction and the reaction the sailor takes with a given point of sail. This is a great chart to commit to memory.
