2011 Summer Sail Camp
What terrific weeks they, with 18 students each week being introduced to the art, science and sheer fun that sailing requires and offers. It was quite the diverse group of students, with girls and boys ranging in age from 9 to 16. The student sailors were introduced to the theory of sailing, the procedure for rigging a sailboat, boat parts and functions, nautical knots and their application, techniques for tacking and jibing, sailing at various angles to the wind (points of sail), and so much more. Our cadre of Junior Instructors worked diligently to provide additional instruction to students who needed that extra special attention to make the learning experience complete for every sailor. By Wednesday of that week students were beginning to put all the elements of instruction together and to control their crafts along the established course with more speed and efficiency. By Thursday, students were displaying their sailing skills through fun exercises such as a treasure hunt and a practice regatta. Friday was Family Fun Day, with students’ family and friends invited to join their young sailors on the water. Of course, the delicious hot dog lunch added that special ingredient that all outdoor activities require. A little friendly
competition on the water provided the fitting finish to an exciting week of
learning to sail a boat! The group of new sailors joined together in the finale
as awards were presented for the sailors’ accomplishments. Then, as the
afternoon and this wonderful week approached its end, we bid our farewell to
all, knowing that we all were enriched through the experience and looking
forward to our next opportunity to inspire young sailors (and older ones, too).
